DUNNE & RABY Response

The Faraday Chair

Speculative design often becomes effective when it functions not simply as commentary on the current state of affairs, but provides a glimpse into an almost imminent reality, one that is often considered undesirable. The Faraday Chair is a good example in that it’s a product that could almost be implemented as a necessary tool in a foreseeable future: there are already services, products, institutions that provide a respite from the constant white noise that comes with being on the grid. Another good example is one by Frog Design – they created an augmented reality mask that also functioned as a necessary gas mask. This would be used in a future where the air is unbreathable and reality is unpalatable.
